The competition watchdog says only about half the 6.6 million individual products marked for recall in Australia have been returned by consumers and it wants tougher laws to ensure that unsafe products aren’t sold in the first place.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said on Monday that it is notified of 650 consumer product recalls each year but that only about half the affected products are ever returned.
The ACCC is recommending that Australians sign up for product safety alerts at Product Safety Australia website www.productsafety.gov.au
With the recall of potentially deadly Takata airbags still ongoing, the ACCC has recommended the government changes consumer law by requiring that businesses take “reasonable steps” to ensure products they sell are not unsafe.
“In Australia, two people die and 145 people are injured every day by unsafe consumer products,” ACCC commissioner Sarah Court said.
“Many people would be surprised to learn there is currently no law that requires businesses to not sell unsafe products.”
The ACCC said that toy products for babies and children account for nearly one in three safety recalls it has monitored.
“We also have the biggest recall in Australian history underway: potentially deadly Takata airbags can still found in about half a million cars,” Ms Court said.
“It is vital that consumers don’t ignore recall information if they receive a letter, email or text from a manufacturer.”
